Alfred Gerber Lackey

Alfred Gerber Lackey Jennings: Alfred Gerber Lackey, affectionately known as “the bald eagle” passed from this life into his eternal one peacefully with his family at his bedside in his home on April 4, 2012 at the age of 89. Mr. Lackey was the only child of the late Aurula Beltram Lackey and Irene Sory Lackey of Salisbury, North Carolina. Mr. Lackey was born on January 20, 1923 in Charleston, South Carolina. He was reared in Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from Boyden High School in Salisbury, North Carolina. He attended the University of Alabama before becoming a cadet at the Citadel Military College in Charleston until a few months prior to gradation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp as a member of the “Greatest Generation”. He served his country proudly as a Marine Sergeant and an Aerial-Radio Gunner on a Torpedo Bomber air craft from the Vella Gulf Escort Carrier in the South Pacific. While in the Marine Corp he became a Featherweight Golden Glove Boxer and rankded as a rifle sharpshooter. Mr. Lackey worked for the division of National Supply of Armco Steel Corporation as a specialty salesman throughout Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, from the time he moved to Jennings until the time he retired. He was a an active member of the Jennings Methodist Church, where he served on all committees and was the head usher for 18 years. He was the past president and a member of the Men’s Bible Class Sunday School and a lay leader for 6 years. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. Mr. Lackey, a board member of the Jennings Golf Club, served as the accountant for 18 years. He was well loved and affectionately known for his good nature, warm smile and generous heart, and will be deeply missed by his family and all those whose lives he touched. His friends and especially his family will miss his renditions of “Happy Birthday”. Mr. Lackey is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Alice Brady Lackey and their four daughters and sons-in-law: Cheryl L. Loughlin and Robert of Cibolo, Texas, Linda L. Moran and Mike, Esq. of Metarie, Louisiana, Alice Marie L. Manus, PhD of St. Louis, Missouri, and Irene L. Milam of Cypress, Texas. Mr. Lackey was preceded in death by his parents, his only son, Benton A. Lackey of Houston, Texas; his oldest grandson, Michael J. L. Moran of Metarie, Louisiana; and son-in-law, David W. Milam of Cypress, Texas. He is the cherished grandfather of Melissa L. Williamson, Major Mary M. Bayer US Army, Melanie L. Berry, Melinda L. Niemietz, Marlowe M. Dravid, M.D., Meghan M. Rusciolelli, Matthew B. Manus, M. Courtney Manus Baker, Esq., and Marc A. Manus. The great grandfather of twelve: Kristian N. Rodriguez, Lourrin and Clara Niemietz of Cibolo, Texas, Brady E. and Clay Bourne R. Williamson of Austin, Texas, John “Trey” and Michael J. Berry of Jacksboro, Texas, Brooke A. and Blaine A. Bayer of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Rowan M., Lily C., and Jackson P. Dravid of New Orleans, and great great granddaughter, Sophia A. Rodriguez. He is also survived by two cousins. Jomarian Holland and Sayte McComb of Birmingham, Alabama. The Lackey Family would like to gratefully acknowledge the gentle and loving care of Lisa Fontenot, CAN and Sue Taheny and Roxanne Leger. A special thanks to Barbara Granger and Kalvin Thibodeaux, CAN who were Mr. Lackey’s personal caregivers; and to Loretta, Megan, and Sarah of Heart of Hospice of Lafayette for all of their attention given to our parents in their last days. Friends of the family are invited to attend a visitation at Matthews & Son Funeral Home in Jennings, Louisiana on 511 North Cutting Avenue in Jennings, Louisiana on Tuesday, April 10 from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Visitation will resume on Wednesday at the Jennings United Methodist Church at 702 Cary Avenue from 8:30 AM until the time of his services at 10:00 AM following with procession to graveside interment with Military Honors at Calvary Cemetery, Jennings, Louisiana In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions to the Jennings United Methodist Church or any charity of your choice, in memory of Mr. Lackey.
